Angela Loveday is presenting an exhibition at the mc2gallery in Milan for the first time. Despite being a young artist, born in 1984, her culture and her interest in esoteric-philosophical literature have influenced her signature style of her photography. This is shown by the title of the exhibition, which takes its cue from what we could define as the bible of decadence, written in 1884 by Joris Karl Huysmans: “Controcorrente (À rebours – Against the Grain)”. “This selection of works within my field of research,” says Angela “is configured in a “reserve” pathway; a study designed to recover an aesthetic (understood as the capacity to sense, to perceive the world) that, in my opinion, has been gradually disappearing over the centuries”. My creative process always starts from the “Anschauung”, that is from the “romantic intuition” whose heart holds the great ‘Zimmeliano’ metaphysical theme: the notion of reality as a finalising the infinite”. Angela Loveday’s work does not limit itself to the baroque, “neo-decadent” aesthetic.“…Just as decadence proposes an identity between I and the world, neo-decadence returns to the idea, or rather the sensation that there is a deep network that unites identity and the world beyond the superficial states of reality, in a zone in which identity disappears and merges with everything…” continues Angela “…This image inevitably becomes obscure, accessible to only a few “initiates”. The poetic (visual, semantic) language becomes vague, indefinite, able to evoke and suggest profound and mysterious realities, parallel worlds in which the areas of light and shadow, each of which needs the other to exist, become confused and confuse our senses, attracting us to these stories that seem to be suspended and to live on in our memories from time immemorial, and perhaps outside of our own ability to remember.
