Born in London and currently living in Spain, Francesca Phillips is a fine art and documentary photographer and filmmaker. Beginning in stills and specials for film and theatre productions, she later trained at KodakĀ“s Centre for Creative Imaging, Maine. As a visiting lecturer for four years in all departments in computer graphics at The Royal College of Art, London, she helped create the first teaching programs in what was then the very new world of image manipulation. The British Institute of Professional Photography awarded her the first Associateship in this area. As a documentary photographer she has had work published in national and international press and magazines, including the The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and The London Daily Telegraph. Her story The Last Flagellants of Northern Spain won a documentary award from the Humanity Photo Awards, China. Most recently she has completed a project on the Trappists, a photographic portrait of life inside the enclosed monastic order of the Cistercians. In 2009 she set up Francesca Phillips Films and wrote, produced and directed Written in the Wind, a documentary on the whistling language of la Gomera in the Canary Islands, commissioned by Al Jazeera, Qatar. In 2010 it won best documentary in anthropology at the Jade Kunlun Awards, China and was screened by the mc2 Gallery, Milan, and the University of Milan as the centrepiece of a discussion on the philosophy of language. Other film projects include the documentary The Family and three short dramas. Francesca is currently producing a series of observational films that explore habitus.
